Motlop doesn't need to be AFL hero at Port
Dec 18, 2017 - 3:27 AM Steven Motlop doesn't feel like he needs to don a superhero's cape to justify his part in Port Adelaide's heralded AFL off-season recruiting spree. The arrivals of Motlop, Tom Rockliff and Jack Watts at the Power headlined a busy period of acquisitions that also included Trent Mackenzie, Jack Trengove and Lindsay Thomas.
But while Port's recruiting splash might have raised fan expectations, Motlop doesn't feel any extra pressure to perform.
"I think we've just got to come in and learn how to be a Port Adelaide player," Motlop told reporters on Monday.
"Just bond with everyone and try to play our roles.
"We don't need one big hero coming in to take the whole game over.
"We just want everyone to play their roles and we'll win as a team and lose as a team as well."
Motlop, who kicked 175 goals in 135 games for Geelong, plans to split his time between forward and midfield roles in Ken Hinkley's retooled line-up.
The mercurial 26-year-old was unsuccessfully shopped around by the Cats during the 2016 trade period, but did enough last season to make himself a sought-after free agent.
Adelaide and Gold Coast were the other main suitors for his services, but the road out of Geelong was always going to end at Alberton for Motlop.
"I was pretty lucky ... I had a few clubs after me but in the end I just thought that Port Adelaide was the best fit for me," Motlop said.
"When I came in and met everyone it just felt right.
"It was always Port Adelaide."
